Our History
  1. BulletThe Very Beginning

On 18th April, 1990, just as interest in the Coast Guard Area Boat Group had diminished, Maurice Smith, Director of the Community Services Committee, North Harbour Rotary Club, wrote to the Browns Bay Boating Club stating that Rotary had identified the need for a high speed all-weather rescue craft located on the North Shore to service the outer harbour and inner gulf areas.  Members of the boating club were asked if they were interested in rostering crews, organising local operations, using the boating club tractor to launch and retrieve and take care of the boat.  On 15 July, 1990, a protocol was signed giving the BBBC responsibility for physical aspects of the operation, maintenance and crewing the 6.7 metre Niad semi-inflatable.  North Harbour Rotary Club would provide the vessel and ongoing funding.  On 25 July, 1990, a meeting was set up to form a parent body to establish North Harbour Sea Rescue.  By October Coast Guard had endorsed the project, sponsors had been approached, documents for Incorporation prepared, job descriptions prepared and a volunteer list compiled.  On Sunday, 8 March, 1992, Waste Management Rescue was officially launched.  Summer 1992/1993 saw the vessel officially enter into rescue service  and fully integrated with Auckland Volunteer Coastguard on 30 July 1994.
